Wolves torch Tri-County

WINFIELD ? The Winfield-Mt. Union football team picked up their first win of the eight-man on Friday night, and they did so in dominant fashion. The Wolves rang Tri-County?s bell, shutting the Trojans out 72-0 behind a dominant rushing attack.

W-MU scored right off the bat with a 60-yard run by Juanito Piper, plus a two-point conversion. Daunte Oepping rushed for a 14-yard touchdown later on in the quarter, and Piper added a 20-yard touchdown rush. The two-point conversion was good on the last score and it was 22-0 after one quarter.

Jacob Ford had the defensive play of the night in the second quarter. Ford picked a pass off and returned it 55-yards to the end zone for a pick-six.

Piper scored two more times on the ground in the second quarter, which helped bring the game to 42-0. The defense put the exclimation point on the first half with another defensive touchdown, this time on a two-yard fumble return touchdown from Graham Hagge. The two-point try was good and the Wolves held a commanding 50-0 lead at the half.

Ford scored again, this time on a two-yard pass from Oepping in the third quarter. The two-point try was no good and W-MU led 56-0 after three.

The Wolves tacked two more scores in the fourth. Keagan Atkinson scored on a 21-yard run, and tacked on the two-point try to stretch the lead to 64-0. Sully Scott scored on a 25-yard run and capped off the game with a two-point run of his own.

Piper finished the game with a mammoth stat-line, carrying the ball 11 times for 219 yards and four scores. Atkinson had 42 yards and a touchdown for second on the team.

Oepping only completed one pass on the day but finished the game with 43 total yards and two total touchdowns. Ford?s two-yard touchdown catch was the only reception for any W-MU player.

Piper had nine tackles in the win. Oepping and Seth Schurr each had five tackles.

Overall, the Wolves hadd 335 total yards, compared to just nine total yards by Tri-County. The Trojans actually went negative in rushing yards, finishing the game with -25.

W-MU moved to 1-2 overall this season and 1-1 in the district. They?ll travel to Montezuma this Friday, Sept. 4.
