Preeminent cardiologist Suzanne Steinbaum, national spokeswoman for the Go Red for Women campaign of the American Heart Association and director of Women?s Heart Health at New York?s Lenox Hill Hospital, will bring her expertise to Iowa women in a free talk May 23 in Fairfield.
Steinbaum has dedicated her career to guiding women through easy steps to a healthy heart and longevity.
Almost 40 percent of all deaths in women are related to coronary heart disease. The American Heart Association emphasizes the need for women to reduce risk factors. Heart disease is approximately 25 percent from uncontrollable factors and 75 percent from controllable factors, such as stress, smoking, diet and depression. Even young women of normal weight and apparently good health are at risk and don?t suspect it, but a heart incident can be rooted in behavior a decade earlier.
Part-time Iowa resident Dr. Abraham Bornstein, a board-certified cardiologist and Fellow of The New York Academy of Medicine in the Division of Evidence-Based Medicine, wrote, ?The rate of repeated heart attacks and one year mortality rates are still higher in women than in men. Since sudden cardiac death is often the first manifestation of coronary artery disease in a high proportion of women, early identification of women at risk for heart disease is critical.?
Steinbaum is author of ?Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum?s Heart Book: Every Woman?s Guide to a Heart Healthy Life.? She was awarded a New York Times Super Doctor, regularly appears in health segments on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and other major networks speaking as a leader in women?s heart health, and has been quoted in U.S. News and World Report, HealthDay, WebMD, Self, Glamour, More, Fitness, The Wall Street Journal and Family Circle.
Steinbaum will explain her unique perspective on reducing risk for heart disease to interested women and health professionals at 10 a.m. May 23 at The Raj. Registration is required by Wednesday at www.tmforwomenshearthealth.org/register or by calling 800-635-7173.
