RICHLAND ? The youth group of Saints Joseph and Cabrini Catholic Church of East Pleasant Plain and Richland was on a mission Sunday as it arrived at the Fairfield Hy-Vee Food and Drug Store.
Breaking into small groups, the children headed down the aisles with a grocery cart, $50 and a suggested list of grocery items to give to the Richland Food Pantry. To add some additional flair to the task, they were challenged to see how many items they could purchase and still stay under $50.
Money to buy the groceries was attained when the children bussed tables at Pizza Ranch in Fairfield during April. They earned more than $300 to to purchase items.
The children managed the grocery shopping task well, and the store manager rewarded them by giving a discount on their total grocery purchase.
Groceries were then loaded into vehicles and taken to Richland to be delivered to the food pantry. With just a few days left of school, demand is expected to increase at the pantry.
The youth group was rewarded for their efforts with a light lunch at Mother Cabrini Church hall. They will resume classes again in the fall.
