Fairfield?s middle school and high school archery club members have participated in three tournaments this season up in Washington and come away with some pretty impressive scores.
The archers shoot three scoring rounds at 10 meters apiece and three at 15 meters with a practice round before each flight. Each flight has five arrows shot and the score is tallied at the end of both.
Gage Hook was Fairfield?s top scorer overall at the Jan. 16 tournament, collecting 246 points. Nine of his arrows hit the bullseye for 10 points each, another five were good enough for nine points and six more were in the eight range. Cole Engle was the next highest scorer for the Trojans with a 243. He had six arrows in the 10 range, nine in the nine range and six more connect for eight points.
Ethan Waugh (FMS) and Mark Diers (FHS) each scored 240 at the tournament. Diers? score was a bit more rounded, with five 10s, eight nines and six eights, while Waugh had two 10s, 13 nines and six eights.
Tristan Waugh, Resse Klemm and Hannah Clubb rounded out the high school scorers with a 233, 215 and 214 respectively.
The remaining middle school scorers were: Khai Klehm 207; Raven Steele 192; Drake Drish 186 and Jon Estle 159.
This season, the archery club invited a small number of students from grades 7-9 to practice for the tournament. Next year, the hope is to open the club to any seventh- through 12th graders and take more archers to tournaments in eastern Iowa.
The club hopes to participate in two more tournaments before the season ends.
