Iowa City Regina scored on nine of its first 10 possessions and put the game away early on its way to a 62-25 victory at Fairfield Thursday night.
Zoe Dutchik scored on five of those trips to tally 10 early points for the Regals (15-3) while the Trojans (5-10) didn?t hit from the field until more than five minutes in. Serena Ward broke the ice for Fairfield with a jumper, but Regina had already opened an 18-3 lead and showed no signs of slowing down.
?I?m not taking anything away from them, but we just didn?t play to our potential,? said Fairfield head coach Billy Strickler. ?I felt it should?ve been a close ball game. There were a lot of things that we?ve been working on that we just didn?t do.?
Regina held a 21-3 advantage at the first break with 13 points coming from Dutchik and most buckets from close range.
?We just attack the basket and try to get those high percentage shots every time,? said first-year Regina head coach Clark Anderson. ?We got it inside were really able to take advantage of our size.?
Dutchik finished with 27 points in three quarters of play to lead the Regals, who didn?t make a 3-pointer the entire game but came up with a total of 26 field goals.
Sidney Baumann and Serena Ward gathered a hint of momentum for Fairfield in the second quarter, with Ward hitting from deep mid-way through the period, but the Regals were not to be denied.
The Trojans finished the game with 22 turnovers and zero assists as Ward scored 11 points, Tori Ogden tallied nine and Baumann finished with three. Taylor Neil added a bucket and had three steals on the night.
Next up for Fairfield is a trip to take on Centerville, which currently sits at 12-1, Tuesday night.
