WASHINGTON — Molly Edgar attended beauty school on a whim but opened her own business on purpose. The owner of the newest hair salon in Washington, The Beauty Room, has only been open for two and a half weeks but has transformed her space exactly to her taste.
Having grown up in Washington, Edgar left to attend college but decided it was not the right career path and switched to beauty school instead. For the first couple of months she was working in Mt. Pleasant but in the back of her mind she knew she wanted to come back to her hometown and try her hand at being her own boss.
In December 2019 she got into the shop at 202 East Second Street, formerly Julie’s Salon, and began transforming the space. The big red stairs out front are the same but inside Edgar redid all the flooring, painted and added her own style to the space.
One thing Edgar is looking forward to is being able to help out in the community.
“I feel like as a small-business owner, I’m obligated to help out the other small businesses and schools as well,” she said.
Once school begins again in the fall, she plans to run specials and donate to local programs to give back to the community she was raised in. Having the freedom to be her own boss and work by herself also appealed to her, she said, and are two of the things she enjoys the most about owning her own salon. Being a new business owner, Edgar said she has no nerves about the new endeavor and instead is looking forward to what the future holds.
“I’m excited. It’s been really fun so far,” she said.
In addition to hair, Edgar also offers nail services and will be soon offering lash extensions once she receives her certification. New clients are encouraged to call her at: 319-759-6864 or find the salon on Facebook at The Beauty Room.
