18th Street in Washington closing for construction

WASHINGTON — Eighteenth Street will be closed starting Sept. 27 from Highway 1 and 92 east to the North Marion Avenue intersection, according to a news release from Washington County.

The 1.15 mile stretch will undergo road grinding, contracted out to West Fork Grinding of Victor, Iowa.

During the closure, signs will mark a detour route using Highway 1, West Fifth Street, and North Marion Avenue, according to the news release.

The project is a road grinding operation aiming to increase the road’s durability and ride smoothness. County Engineer Jacob Thorius said construction would likely last one or two weeks, running a tab of about $82,000, with costs shared between the county and the city of Washington.
