In the heart of Trenton, a playground and grassy park sits surrounded by houses.
Among the brisk wind and still silence of the area, stands tall a black, granite stone – a dedication to the veterans of Trenton.
Five years ago, Stanley Hill, 90, and his sister, headed a committee to create a dedication for the veterans of the area. The statue would come to form in May of 2015.
Drawing names from newspaper archives, obituaries and the internet, the two, alongside the American Legion Auxiliary in Trenton and the Methodist Church, developed a plan.
For about $6,000, the statue is displayed in the center of the Trenton Park, next to the flag pole and a park bench for observers.
The American Legion Auxiliary and the Methodist Church both contributed to the memorial.
The display currently lists 404 names. Residents are listed who served in the Revolutionary War of 1775 to the current global wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and more.
Names are listed by wars and conflicts.
The stone reads, 'In honor of all who served in the United States Armed Forces from the Trenton, Iowa community.”
Hill, a veteran of 38 years, had served in active duty for four of those 38.
'I'm just a person who likes to do something for somebody else,” Hill said.
