FAIRFIELD – The group Fairfield Cares is hosting the Iowa Director of AARP Michael Wagler in a special presentation Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.
From 1:30-3 p.m. that day, Wagler will speak on “What AARP Can Do for You,” reviewing what the organization does for Iowans. The event is free and open to the public.
Wagler told The Union that his organization’s acronym previously stood for the American Association of Retired Persons, though today’s it’s merely known as AARP. He said the group doesn’t just address issues that Americans face in retirement but also how they plan for the retirement.
“We want to be an advocate for the aged 50-plus,” Wagler said. “We want to empower people to age as they choose.”
Wagler said the group used to focus on an older group of people, though that has changed over time, and today the group encompasses a younger set of people who might still be working and needing to plan for their coming retirement.
In addition to hosting Wagler’s talk, Fairfield Cares will use the opportunity to introduce the community to the Helpful Village resource, which seeks to “help people age at home.”
According to Wagler’s biography, before joining the AARP team, he was the State Coordinator of the Iowa Economic Development Authority’s Main Street Iowa program.
“In this role, he helped lead the state’s comprehensive downtown revitalization and community engagement efforts. Michael is also a member of the Main Street America Board of Directors,” states his bio.
