CLIVE, Iowa — A southeast Iowa man who claimed a $100,000 Powerball prize said his win brought a sense of relief.
“I’m sitting here trying to figure out, what am I going to do? And then I realize that (at) 57 years old, I’m going to be pretty much debt-free,” William Dalziel told officials on Tuesday as he claimed his prize at the lottery’s Cedar Rapids regional office. “That was the real joy of everything.”
Dalziel, of Ainsworth, matched four of five white balls and the Powerball in the Jan. 22 drawing. He was one number away from winning that night’s $75.4 million jackpot.
He bought his lucky easy-pick ticket the night of the drawing at RJ’Z Express, 2 Escort Lane in Iowa City and left the ticket in the sun visor of his car. He checked his ticket the following day after work.
“It came up, ‘Congratulations,’” said Dalziel, an assistant manager at a home improvement store. “I said, ‘Oh, I won $4 or $7 like I normally do,’ and then all of a sudden a whole bunch of zeros came up.”
His initial $50,000 prize was doubled because he opted for the $1 Power Play® add-on, which multiples non-jackpot prize amounts by up to 10 times.
The winning numbers in the Jan. 22 drawing were 8-14-33-36-67 and Powerball 17. The Power Play was 2.
“I don’t consider myself lucky,” Dalziel said. “I might have to after this.”
