Traffic cones and lane closures have become the norm along West Madison Street in recent weeks.
The shift in traffic is due to a major project that Alliant Energy is doing in the area.
“We are replacing the main gas line in Washington,” Alliant spokesperson Morgan Hawk said Tuesday. “This will increase gas capacity and upgrade the system.
“The system will be able to accommodate more usage once it’s completed.”
Alliant is replacing a 2-inch gas line with a 4-inch gas line from South C Avenue to South Iowa Avenue.
“We’re also installing lines to side streets to connect to the system,” Hawk said.
The project includes replacing a gas line on East Monroe Street between South Iowa Avenue and South Second Avenue.
“We anticipate that the entire project will be completed in mid-June,” Hawk said.
Ultimately, the project will enhance the reliability and safety of Alliant’s entire system in Washington, Hawk said.
“We appreciate the support of our customers and the community while we do this work,” he said.
