On Monday morning, the Richmond Amvets Post 107 held their annual Memorial Day service at Sharon Hill Cemetery.
After the Amvets color guard marched to the Unknown Soldiers Monument in the cemetery, the Mid-Prairie marching band played the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
A wreath was placed at the monument by the Ladies’ Auxiliary, and members of the local Boy Scout troop placed flags at each corner of the monument.
Post Commander Keven Reece gave a brief address to the crowd of more than 100 people who gathered at the cemetery.
Reece implored everyone to think about the sacrifices made by all of the country’s fallen soldiers and to come together to honor them.
“Let it be an indication of unity in this country,” Reece said.
He then called for a 30-second moment of silence to honor the fallen soldiers, after which, three volleys were fired.
Following the ceremony in Kalona, the Amvets and the marching band traveled to Richmond to conduct services at both the Richmond Catholic Cemetery and the Richmond public cemetery.
