WASHINGTON — Washington High School students Audrey Anderson and Micah Rees were named the school’s homecoming queen and king after a pep rally Thursday night.
“I just love all the people that care for this and support this, it’s just a very exciting experience,” Anderson said in a brief interview following the coronation. “I’m just very thankful, life is good, everything feels so great in this moment, and I’m so happy.”
Rees agreed.
“It feels great, it’s awesome seeing all these parents and friends and family come out and just be so happy for you,” he said.
The two are highly involved at the school. Rees is a member of Washington’s band, National Honor Society, cross-country and track teams, while Anderson is a member of the school’s soccer team.
Rees’ fun fact about himself, presented at the ceremony, was his habit of eating ice cream sandwiches with a fork. Anderson’s was her favorite movie, the Truman Show.
Both said they hadn’t expected to win the crown going in.
“I just went into it letting the outcome come,” Rees said. “I wasn’t thinking about it too much … it was very fast. All of a sudden we were lined up, and all of a sudden they were breaking open the letter, and I heard my name. It was crazy.”
Anderson said she was shocked to hear her name called as well.
“It’s just a sudden, ‘Whoa,’” she said. “Your mind is blank, and you’re focused on that moment, really.”
Spirit night marked one highlight from a week packed with events as the school prepared to take on Mt. Pleasant in its homecoming game Friday night.
A series of themed dress-up days at the school coincided with a successful cross-country meet Tuesday at the Washington Golf & Country Club, where Demons beat their Southeast Iowa Conference rivals in both races with a boys’ score of 44 and girls’ score of 45.
On Wednesday, cheerleaders and members of the homecoming court visited WCDC and area retirement homes during the day, before classes squared off in a powder puff tournament at night. Seniors ultimately emerged victorious from that event.
Friday’s theme was Demon Spirit Day, with students donning the school’s iconic orange and black colors as seniors visited district elementary schools before the start of a homecoming parade and rally in the afternoon, which drew hundreds to Washington’s square before the evening’s football game.
