WASHINGTON — Democrat Anna Banowsky, a resident of Washington, has announced intent to run for State Representative for House District 92, which encompasses all of Washington County and parts of Johnson County, in the upcoming 2024 election.
“The people of Washington and Johnson County aren’t being heard by the legislature,” said Banowsky. “We’re seeing issues such as public schools not being adequately funded, a lack of access to mental health care, restriction of reproductive health care, and a decrease in protections for the environment. I want to make sure that my constituents have a voice in Des Moines.”
Banowsky has lived in Washington since 2023, after moving from Iowa City. She decided to move to Washington after seeing the downtown area and the great sense of community that the town has to offer. She loves the friendliness of the small-town and has been enjoying all of the events put on by the community.
Banowsky (26) is currently a graduate student and teaching assistant at the University of Iowa, pursuing an master's degree in Anthropology. Teaching a course each semester has allowed her to see the impact of Iowa’s K-12 education on students seeking higher education. Banowsky would like to ensure that all Iowa students receive an affordable and quality education, from preschool to college and beyond.
Prior to attending graduate school, Banowsky earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Oklahoma. While attending her undergraduate institution, she served as treasurer for the Constitutional Studies Student Association, where she said she learned a lot about public policy, law, and foreign affairs.
