The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for portions of north central Illinois, northwest Illinois, west central Illinois, east central Iowa, northeast Iowa, southeast Iowa, including Jefferson County and northeast Missouri.
Accumulating snow will overspread the area during the evening and end by sunrise Saturday. Amounts of 1 to 2 inches will be possible northeast of a Vinton to Galesburg, Ill. line. Southwest of this line amounts of less than an inch are expected.
Strong winds of 15 to 30 mph tonight will result in drifting snow in rural and open areas. Patchy blowing snow may also occur.
Snow will spread over the area Saturday night with most locations seeing some accumulation. At this time, areas north of Interstate 80 should see the most snow with amounts in the 1 to 3 inch range.
Another surge of arctic air will move into the region Sunday afternoon and evening. The cold air will be accompanied by strong northwest winds that will cause considerable blowing and drifting.
Temperatures will be falling rapidly overnight with wind chills dropping to 20 below to 40 below zero over most of the area by Monday morning.
This will be a prolonged period of brutally cold air. Temperatures will remain below zero over much of the area Sunday night through Wednesday morning. Wind chills are expected to remain near or colder than 20 below zero.
Wind chills around 30 below zero or colder are expected north of Interstate 80 from late Sunday night through Tuesday morning.
