Area communities plan Veterans Day observances
Several area communities are planning Veterans Day celebrations to honor the men and women who are and who have served in the U.S. military forces.
Lockridge program Saturday
Lockridge?s annual Veterans Day Celebration is scheduled Saturday morning beginning at the Lockridge Community Center.
The honor guard will meet at 7:45 a.m. at the community center, then march to the cemetery at about 7:50 a.m.

Lockridge program Saturday
Lockridge?s annual Veterans Day Celebration is scheduled Saturday morning beginning at the Lockridge Community Center.
The honor guard will meet at 7:45 a.m. at the community center, then march to the cemetery at about 7:50 a.m.
At the cemetery, the flag will be raised at 8 a.m., followed by the singing of the national anthem ?The Star-Spangled Banner,? by those who are assembled. Rifle team members will fire a volley of rounds, and Roger McHone will play ?Taps.?
After the ceremony at the cemetery, those in attendance can return to the community center for coffee, tea, juice and pastries and a program.
The program, set to begin at 8:45 a.m., will include updates on the Lockridge Veterans Memorial, POW/MIA recognition and a moment of silence. ?
Program set at Cardinal school
Community members are invited to join Cardinal Community School District students in honoring the brave men and women who have given so much in service to the country, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice, at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 11 in the Cardinal High School gym.
The guest speaker will be U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Gavin Gardner.
The program will feature vocal and instrumental music selections performed by the school?s music department. ?
Van Buren collecting donations
The Van Buren Community High School in Keosauqua will have an assembly at 10:50 a.m. Nov. 11 in the gymnasium to honor military veterans in the community.
The program will include a presentation by Glen Hendricks and a special guitar solo by Levi Sherrod.
As part of the Veterans Day program, the college-credit speech class will be gathering items for the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
The approved donation list includes candy bars, cans of pop, shampoo, lotion, body wash, men?s deodorant, men?s cologne, aftershave, paint-by-number kits, word puzzle books, 2011 date books, address books, photo albums and laundry soap. ?
