Area represented well at state track meet

The final tally is in, and the Fairfield girls? track team will be represented by eight athletes in seven events at the upcoming 2012 state meet.

In addition to automatic qualifiers Sydney Howard in the 100 and 200, Jessica Lamb in the 800, as well as the 4x200, three more Fairfield events were among the top 24 in Class 3A.

Junior Sidney Baumann made the final cut and grabbed the No. 14 seed in the discus with a throw of 117-feet, 1.5-inches, and Marisa Repp made the high jump field with a leap of 5 feet. The 4x800, which finished third at districts, is seeded ninth overall. The quartet of Hannah Sobaski, Lamb, Erin Thompson and Sesali Martin ran a season best of 9:56 at the district meet to qualify.

Howard is seeded third in the 100 (12.45) and fifth in the 200 (25.97). Lamb qualified 11th in the open-800 Friday with a time of 2:24.17.

The state meet is scheduled to get under way at 9 a.m. Thursday starting with Sidney Baumann in the Class 3A discus.

Pekin girls qualify in six events

Nine girls will represent Pekin in a total of six events at the state track meet scheduled to kick off Thursday.

Celsey Conger and Whitney Horras will be in the 800-meter run field, and Brenna Conger has qualified for the 3,000. Four Pekin relays, including the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley, will run.

Warrior, Comet girls to state

The Van Buren girls? track team will be represented in four events and Cardinal will be represented in one at the upcoming state meet.

For the Warriors, junior Hanna Haynes has qualified in three events and sophomore Unity Daugherty just made the cut in one.

Haynes will participate in the long jump Thursday before competing Friday morning in the 400-meter hurdle finals and 100-meter hurdle preliminaries. Haynes holds the third best qualifying mark in the 2A long jump at 17-feet, 1.75-inches.

Daugherty is set to run in the 3,000 first thing Thursday morning.

Freshman Jordan Smith is the lone runner representing Cardinal after qualifying in the 400-meter dash. Her district time of 1:01.62 places her 13th fastest in Class 2A.

Johnson making return trip

Maharishi School?s Essa Johnson is making a return trip to the state meet after winning the long jump at the district meet in WACO Thursday.

Johnson?s district leap of 16-feet, 7.5-inches places her eighth out of 24 qualifiers.

Sines top qualifier in 100, 200

Bryce Sines is Class 1A?s top qualifier in both the 100-meter dash (11.18) and 200-meter dash (22.61).

Last season as a junior, Sines placed fourth in the 100 (11.54) and third in the 200 (23.04). He will hope heat one, lane four is lucky as he has grabbed the assignment in both races for Thursday?s preliminaries.

Sines also is among the best in Class 1A in the high jump and long jump. Sines is seeded fifth in the high jump and fourth in the long jump.
