Although you probably haven?t seen the name Seth Mecklenburg at the beginning of an internationally-known movie, it?s not because you aren?t film-savvy or behind on the times.
Mecklenburg is an up and coming filmmaker with aspirations to make a living crafting films, and has decided to start part of that journey in Mt. Pleasant with his first feature length production, ?Daniel German?s Humongous Apartment?.
?The story focuses on a writer who is struggling a bit in life and in his job. In an effort to save his career, he decides to lock himself in his apartment and not leave until he finishes his latest writing project,? Mecklenburg explains.
As the story progresses, Daniel German is introduced to a whole host of characters that stop by his apartment from neighbors, to cousins, to pizza delivery boys. Within the comedy/drama, however, Mecklenburg tackles the topics of mental illness and self-discovery.
?Daniel suffers from chronic depression, and has to learn how to go through the ups and downs of life, and hopefully become a better man,? he says. ?It?s really a story about how to leave a positive mark on the world.?
Not only does Mecklenburg star as the lead in the film, but he is also the director and screenwriter of the project. Although this is his first feature film production, Mecklenburg has produced his fair share of short films.
Hailing from Wisconsin, he studied digital media at Buena Vista University, which is where he met fellow co-star and Mt. Pleasant native, Kadie Dennison. Dennison does a large amount of voice-over work for the film and also makes a cameo as the character of Janet Hawkins.
?There are some very funny and complex characters (in the movie) that we can all relate to. I also hope people can take away some insight into how depression and other mental illnesses affect a person and those around that person. While a comedy, the heart of this film is very dramatic and poignant,? says Dennison. ?I am excited to be filming this weekend here, in Mt. Pleasant. And I can?t wait to see the final product.?
Currently, the film has a September 2015 release date. The premiere for the film will take place in Mecklenburg?s hometown, but he plans on securing releases across the Midwest.
