A state audit says a former Burlington elementary school office clerk and a former school secretary misused $17,000, some of it school money and some of it from a parent teacher organization account.
State Auditor David Vaudt says more than $12,000 was taken from the Grimes Elementary School parent teacher organization and transferred into accounts used by former school clerk Marsha Johnson and her family.
Another $1,600 was allegedly improperly used by Dana Hanson, a former school secretary.
Auditors could not determine what happened to $3,000 because it was handled by both women and it?s unclear what happened to it.
Hanson resigned last June and Johnson was fired in August. Both have been charged with theft and have pleaded not guilty. Trials are scheduled for May 8.
