MT. PLEASANT - As the general election approaches, Henry County Auditor Shelley Barber encourages Iowans to participate in National Voter Registration Month.
Barber, with Secretary of State Paul Pate, is reminding eligible voters to register to vote or update their registration in preparation for the upcoming election.
'It's a privilege to be able to vote and have a say. A lot of people don't have that right and as citizens of America we should take advantage of that,” Barber said.
National Voter Registration Month, established in 2002 by the National Association of Secretaries of State, encompasses National Voter Registration Day which occurs on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
'As we get closer to Election Day, it's important for all Iowans who want to take part in the process to make sure they are registered to vote and their information is up-to-date,” Pate said in a statement.
Voters must be at least 17 years of age to register and have until Oct. 24 to register for the general election. According to the secretary of state's office, approximately 90 percent of eligible Iowans are registered with more than two million active registered voters in the state.
'It only takes a few minutes. I encourage all eligible Iowans to be voters,” Pate said.
