IOWA CITY (AP) ? Supporters of an ordinance that bans people younger than 21 from being in Iowa City bars late at night say the repeal effort?s failure shows an understanding that the law is working.
The proposed repeal was overwhelmingly rejected Tuesday, 66 percent to 34 percent.
University of Iowa Vice President for Student Life Tom Rocklin told the Iowa City Press-Citizen that after three years of the ban, which requires minors to leave bars after 10 p.m., people see the law as ?an unmitigated success.?
Iowa City Mayor Matt Hayek credited an effort to explain the ordinance?s effects for the vote.
University of Iowa student Michael Kessler, who was a leader in efforts to repeal the ban, told The Daily Iowan he was shocked the repeal failed by a wide margin.
