Barn quilt
Mark Shafer gives a dedication speech Monday afternoon as the barn quilt designed by Elaine Duncan, center, holding her entry, was dedicated to the memory of Juanita Johnson, a founding member of the William Henry Coop Chapter of Questers. The 8-foot by 8-foot quilt block is on the south side of a Louden-equipped barn at the Jim Flinspach residence, about 2.5 miles north of Fairfield on Highway 1.

The William Henry Coop chapter of Questers purchased the quilt block, which was the winning entry in a design contest sponsored by the Fairfield Art Association, and is the newest addition to the series of barn quilts in Jefferson County. Frank Redeker was the first in the county to install a quilt block on a barn, which is northwest of town on Brookville Road. Iowa Prison Industries replicated the block on metal, which is attached to a plywood base.
Also pictured are, from left, Donna Wallarab, Questers president; Martha Flinspach; Bernice Ogden; Allen Cobb, who enlarged and prepared the design for printing; Duncan; Jim Flinspach; Shafer; Bob Hoerlein, who helped with installation; Burt Chojnowski, and Ron Blair.
For this an a submitted photo of the barn quilt installation, see the Tuesday, April 6, 2010, printed edition of The Fairfield Ledger.
