The city of Fairfield demolished the wood-framed bathroom near the entrance to Chautauqua Park Tuesday.
Heavy machinery was still on scene Wednesday hauling away the debris from the structure that is believed to date to the 1960s. Fairfield Parks and Recreation Director Calvin Todd said cracks in the foundation and resulting broken pipes were a sign it was time to scrap the building and build anew. The parks department plans to put portable toilets in the park once it opens later this spring, and to build a permanent bathroom either late this year or early next year.
The parks department has maintained a portable toilet on the east edge of the park for a few years, and Todd said that portable toilet will remain.
