FAIRFIELD - The bathrooms in the old A-frame wooden building at Chautauqua Park in Fairfield will be demolished in the next couple of weeks.
Fairfield Park and Recreation Director Calvin Todd said the bathrooms are being removed because of cracks in the foundation and because of broken pipes below it. The red-painted building, which dates to the 1960s, has reached the end of its life span, Todd said.
The bathroom at Chautauqua Park is adjacent to the playground near the entrance to the park. The parks department closes the bathroom for winter by securing boards over the building's entrances. Todd said the bathroom is not accessible now because the city's parks are not technically open, even though members of the public can use them.
Todd said the parks department will place two portable toilets near the entrance, and continue to maintain the one portable toilet on the east end of the park that is there now. He said the city plans to build a new permanent bathroom, perhaps later this year or by next spring at the latest.
