The Washington Community Y has held Christmas parties for children since its creation in 1925. In the mid-1940s, the Y Women began a ?Children?s Christmas Bazaar? which continues to this day. This year?s bazaar is Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon on the third floor of the Community Y.
The bazaar is an opportunity for children to purchase gifts for their siblings and parents. The gifts are donated to the bazaar by local volunteers, some of whom make the gifts themselves.
All the gifts are laid out on tables, each one with a price tag on it. The gifts range in price from 50 cents to $5. The children who typically participate are from kindergarten through third grade. Kids who are a few years older act as ?elves? who walk the kids around the room and make sure they purchase gifts for every person on their list. In years past, the Boy Scouts have served as the elves.
Greg Woller, executive director of the Community Y, said the children?s bazaar has been a wonderful event for the community.
