Lacey park beach has not re-opened
KEOSAUQUA ? The beach at Lacey-Keosauqua State Park remained closed Monday after being closed over the weekend by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Kevin Baskins, spokesman for the DNR, said Monday morning the beach had re-opened, but later he contacted The Ledger to explain the beach was still closed and not expected to re-open until late this afternoon or Wednesday.
Baskins said a contractor worked over the weekend to unplug the sewer line serving six cabins. The plugged line caused an overflow of sewage into the lake Friday. But, he said, no one was available to take water samples until Monday to make sure no bacteria is in the water.
Baskins said not very much sewage is believed to have reached the lake, but the beach was closed as a precautionary measure. Signs were posted to warn swimmers not to go in the water.
Funeral Friday for U.S. Navy SEAL from Iowa
ROCKFORD (AP) ? Funeral services will be on Friday for a Navy SEAL from Iowa who was among the Americans who died aboard a downed helicopter in Afghanistan.
The Des Moines Register says Monday that services for 35-year-old U.S. Navy Petty Officer Jon Tumilson, of Rockford, are scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School in Rockford. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.
Thirty Americans and eight Afghans were killed Aug. 6 when a rocket-propelled grenade fired by a Taliban insurgent downed their Chinook helicopter en route to a combat mission.
Tumilson joined the Navy after graduating from high school in Rockford in 1995.
Memorial arrangements are being handled by the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City.
Thrill riders unhurt in incident at fair
DES MOINES (AP) ? A brother and sister from Corwith who spent more than two hours in the air when their thrill ride malfunctioned say they?ll be content with more sedate action for the rest of their visit to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.
Twenty-three-year-old Jenny Studer and her brother, 17-year-old Derek, weren?t hurt when The Ejection Seat ride malfunctioned on Monday afternoon.
Jenny Studer told The Des Moines Register she saw a part come off at the end of their ride. She says that?s when she knew something was wrong.
A fair spokeswoman says that when the Studers? ride was over, safety systems engaged and prevented their seat from returning to the ground.
A crane was brought in to help get them down.
The ride is being examined.
