Bell-ringing tradition
Celebrants at the Salem Church of God in Washington County ring the church bell for Independence Day. The tradition dates back over 60 years, and is based on a quote from John Adams, who said the nation's independence "ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other."
