WASHINGTON — A rotating assembly of musicians known as “Big Band Theory” will play in Washington July 12, celebrating the group’s 18th year since it began as an informal get-together in one member’s basement.
The performance at the Washington Area Performing Arts and Events Center (in Washington High School) is open to attendees free of charge, although organizers request a freewill donation.
This year’s show will be opened by members of the Kessell Jazz Camp, a middle school and high school day camp which is funded by the Washington Music Boosters and the John Kessell Legacy Music Education Fund, itself named after the founder of Big Band Theory, who died in 2022.
“These young artists bring energy, passion, and serious talent to the stage, and we’re proud to showcase the next generation of jazz,” said an invitation to community members in a Washington Chamber of Commerce newsletter July 3. “Come out, support our youth, and enjoy an evening of incredible music. It’s a celebration of community, growth, and the vibrant talent we’re so fortunate to nurture right here at home.”
In an interview before his final performance, Kessell — who had esophageal cancer — said he hoped the band of constantly changing members would live on in his absence.
“I hope that it continues, it is kind of my legacy,” he said. “I hope that people continue to get together to play and continue to have the joy of this whole experience.”
The 2025 show runs from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, July 12, according to its posting on the Washington Chamber of Commerce event calendar.
