WINFIELD ? After going down by as many as 16 points in the third quarter, the Winfield-Mt. Union boys? basketball team made a huge comeback to claim a win over Pekin, 54-49, and stop a seven-game skid.
The Wolves trailed 31-20 at halftime, and it only got worse as the third quarter started and Pekin scored the first six points of the second half.
But four minutes into the quarter, the Wolves started making up ground. They cut the Panthers? lead to nine, then to five. Finally, with three minutes left in the game, the Wolves tied the score at 44.
With a minute remaining on the clock, they had taken a lead, 50-46, but Pekin stayed with them, and with just a few seconds left, the score was 52-49.
Pekin had possession and the opportunity to force overtime, but W-MU?s Lucas Rappenecker got a steal and made a layup to seal the win for the Wolves.
Rappenecker finished with eight points. Max Fricke led the team with 20 points and Jake Edwards chipped in 10.
The Wolves are now 4-14 on the season and 3-14 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division, and they host Columbus on Saturday, starting with the JV boys at 6 p.m.
