Biker hospitalized after hitting deer

WELLMAN — A motorcyclist was badly injured after hitting a deer on Ginkgo Avenue, heading north out of Wellman Thursday night.

In a preliminary accident report, police said Steve Etheredge was transported by AirCare to the University of Iowa Hospital around 7 p.m., after he was “thrown from the motorcycle” by the collision.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, which police said caused “minor damage” to the bike. A Washington County Call For Service log said a state accident report was filed after the incident, but one was not available through the Iowa State Patrol website as of Friday morning.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Wellman Quick Response Service and Wellman Fire Department also responded to the call, according to police records.
