The Fairfield Community School District Board of Directors had a special meeting Tuesday evening to approve two change orders for the Trojan Stadium track project.
Fred McElwee, director of auxiliary services, explained both change orders were necessary because of unforeseen issues on the project.
The first change is to install 4-inch perforated high-density polyethylene pipe at the base of the retaining wall and solid HDPE pipe to repair clay tiles on the visitors? side.
If the changes were not made, rain and melted snow would have drained onto the new track, said McElwee.
The cost for the materials and labor will be $7,216.20.
The second change is to repair the wall in front of the visitors? side bleachers.
McElwee said when contractors removed the old track, they found the concrete wall in front of the bleachers had been built over an original brick and mortar surface. Contractors plan to cut out a section of the wall and place an L-shaped cap over the bottom step so the asphalt for the new track will come up to that clean surface.
?It gives a much better, straight surface, and it should last a long time,? McElwee said.
The materials and labor will cost $26,162.75.
McElwee said the work could end up costing less because the sooner it is done, the less it will cost.
McElwee thanked the school board members for attending the short meeting Tuesday and approving the change orders so that the project could continue. He said contractors planned to start on the approved changes this morning.
Both of the changes required the board?s approval because each was more than $5,000. The board had previously approved allowing McElwee, the superintendent and the district business manager to OK change orders under $5,000 so work wouldn?t have to be stopped for the board to consider and approve every change.
Work at the stadium, including the replacement of the six-lane running track, repair to the concrete bleachers, repair to the bleacher area drainage and replanting the south end bank, got under way at the end of May, and the completion date is Sept. 5. Norris Asphalt is the contractor.
The $550,000 project will be paid for with the district?s S.A.V.E. funds.
