Madi tells it like this: In 2012, I was 17, showing my final dairy show of my 4-H career, and Brad was 15 also showing in the dairy show but only as a freshman.
I saw Brad the first day of the fair and thought he was very attractive. Luckily for me our parents knew each other, so my mom, of course, went and made small talk with his mom. After finding out he was just finished his freshman year of high school, I quickly lost interest since I was heading to college a short month later.
During this time Brad also saw me and, of course, being a teenage boy went and talked to his friends about me, but never actually talked to me at all during the fair. That year when he was just 15, he told his best friend that he was going to marry me one day.
Three years later, I returned to the Washington County Fair to help my twin brothers in their dairy show. It was early in the week during the grandstand event, and I was checking on the cows in the barn.
Brad walked into the barn to talk to me and catch up after years had gone by. At the time, I forgot who he was, all while he was trying to ask me out.
We spent a few minutes catching up, but before he could ask me out to dinner, a high school friend interrupted him. Since I remembered how young he was, I still wasn't interested, so I told him to have a good fair and went back to the grandstand event, but not before Brad said I'll catch up with you again this week.
I thought that was weird that he would say that, but as it turns out we never ran into each other causing Brad to have to message me on Facebook to ask me out.
Thank God for moms, because when I got the message, I almost responded back immediately saying no. I told my mom that the little kid from three years ago asked me out.
She said to give him a chance and go on the date that weekend. After the first date, I knew he was special.
Then after spending a semester together at Iowa State, I knew I was going to marry him.
Three years and nine months after re-meeting at the county fair and almost seven years after Brad said he was going to marry me, we got married in my hometown.
As of Feb. 1, we are just weeks away from meeting our baby girl - all thanks to a dairy cow, 4-H and the Washington County Fair
