MT. PLEASANT - While working as a substance abuse counselor, Lisa Pforr started two sober living houses in Ottumwa. Now, with the help of Trey Hegar and the 2nd Presbyterian Church, she has opened one in Mt. Pleasant, at 905 S Iris St.
These institutions, according to Pforr, play a vital part in the transition from a rehabilitation or treatment center to a normal life. Pforr prefers that people stay at least 6 months, to ‘...get a good foundation on sober living’. While there, Brave Heart facilitates connections to potential employers. They also offer a robust support group for those getting back on their feet after the harrowing experience of addiction.
Since its inception in Oct. 2025, Brave Heart Sober Living of Mt. Pleasant has housed 8 people, the majority of which are gainfully employed or working at the facility itself. Pforr and Hegar are exploring the possibility of a food truck. This would both provide employment to the residents and revenue for the House, which is entirely self-funded.
In the meantime, Brave Heart has applied for 501(c)(3) status. If this is approved, they will become a tax-exempt nonprofit. Furthermore, they seek donations from generous parties, and hope to foster connections in the business community.
