FAIRFIELD — All Fairfield school buildings were put on lock down Friday after law enforcement officers were called to investigate dangerous activity around Pence Elementary playground.
Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding said Friday that the schools were put under lock down because of a report of a possible man armed with a firearm near Pence. He said local officers and those from neighboring counties and state officers responded.
“No arrests have been made and no threats are considered active,” Chauncey said Friday afternoon.
The school district announced at about 1:30 p.m. Friday that all buildings were under a Level 2 lock down. Students were supposed to be dismissed at that time, but the district announced that they would not be released until law enforcement officers said it was safe.
Further updates on the district’s various Facebook pages indicated that law enforcement officers had secured the areas around each school building, that the students would be released at 1:45 p.m., and that buses would be released shortly after that. Later, the district announced that buses would arrive at each attendance center for a 2 p.m. release, and that officers would remain at each building to help with increased security for the safety of students.
