An unnamed 33-year-old woman died after she “experienced a medical emergency” at the Washington Steele Family Aquatics Center Friday, June 24, according to a statement from the organization.
A representative from the Y said the woman was accompanied by her care provider from Systems Unlimited, sitting in the shallow end of the pool when she “started to have difficulty remaining in a sitting position.”
“A lifeguard and nurse bystander assisted in helping her out of the water, and she lost consciousness,” the statement said. “911 was called and the lifeguard, (two nurses) and an EMT — all there to swim — administered CPR and the AED until the ambulance arrived and transported her to Washington County Hospital and Clinics. We learned that medical professionals were not able to save her life.”
Representatives from the Y said they were deeply saddened by the death of this local resident.
“Safety and prevention remain a top priority at the pool, and while every effort was made to save her life, sadly that was not the final outcome in this situation,” Amy Schulte, YMCA director said. “Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and providers of care for the individual involved in this incident.”
The name of the individual is being withheld pending notification of family, according to the Washington County YMCA.
