?Burst Your Thirst? registration opens May 8
AMES ? Live Healthy Iowa?s Burst Your Thirst Challenge will open registration May 8.
Burst Your Thirst, a six-week hydration and physical activity challenge, is in its third year being offered to Iowans and will take place June 18 through July 30.
To register, participants must form teams of two to 10 Iowans, designate a team captain and have the team captain sign the team up at www.livehealthyiowa.org.
Teams compete in a web-based competition tracking water consumption and minutes of physical activity. Each member will report personal weekly totals in an effort to accumulate points and move their team up the challenge leaderboard.
With a registration fee of $8, each participant will receive a 26-ounce water bottle; weekly emails containing hydration tips, healthy recipes and summer activity ideas; access to a personal tracking page on the Live Healthy Iowa website; and opportunities to win team incentives and individual prizes.
In 2011, Burst Your Thirst had 2,720 participants on 537 teams from 94 counties. Participants logged nearly 6.6 million ounces of water and more than 4.7 million activity minutes.
Iowa begins protective order alert system
DES MOINES (AP) ? Iowa has become one of a dozen states to notify domestic violence victims when protective orders have been issued to keep an abuser away from the victim.
Attorney General Tom Miller announced the program today, saying it?s financed by a federal Department of Justice grant. Ongoing costs of $160,000 come from a state program funded by fines and penalties assessed against criminals.
Domestic abuse victims now may sign up with the state and receive automated phone call or email notifications when courts issue a protective order. That includes notification of when an order is about to expire.
Miller says the program?s intent is to give victims peace of mind.
Last year the Iowa Protective Order Notification for Domestic Abuse Program processed more than 15,000 protective and no-contact orders.
JFK assassination medical examiner dies in Iowa
DES MOINES (AP) ? Dr. Earl Rose, the medical examiner in Dallas when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, has died at age 85.
Rose?s wife, Marilyn, said he died Tuesday at Oaknoll retirement community in Iowa City. She says he was diagnosed with Parkinson?s disease and then developed dementia.
Kennedy was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital after he was shot Nov. 22, 1963. Rose insisted an autopsy be performed and stood in a doorway to block Kennedy?s aides as they removed his coffin.
The Roses moved from Dallas to Iowa City in 1968, where he was a forensic pathologist and University of Iowa professor.
His wife says a memorial service will be held June 11 in Iowa City.
