Caroline Marie Pencil, 78, of Birmingham, died Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at the Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 11, 2015, at the Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham with Larry Smith officiating.

Caroline Marie Pencil, 78, of Birmingham, died Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at the Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 11, 2015, at the Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham with Larry Smith officiating.
The family will receive friends on Friday afternoon from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham. Memorials may be made to Noah?s Ark animal shelter in Fairfield or to the McCreery Cancer Center at the Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.
Pencil was born Dec. 28, 1936, at Bad Axe, Mich., the daughter of Edward and Edna Laughlin Leyden.
She lived most of her life in the Birmingham community and graduated from Birmingham High School in 1954, where she lettered in basketball. She married Lawrence Pencil on Feb. 5, 1955, in Fairfield.
She had worked at the Fairfield Glove Factory, J ? Mart convenience store in Birmingham, and she was a bus driver for the Van Buren County Schools for 16 years. Pencil also owned and operated a ceramic shop and had served on the Birmingham City Council for 10 years.
She enjoyed sewing, camping, cooking, ceramics and spending time with her grandchildren.
Pencil is survived by her husband, Larry; two daughters, Debra (Marion) Wolver, of Birmingham; Dixie Pencil, of Birmingham; one son, Charles (Olwen) Pencil, of Sonoma, Calif.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dwayne Leyden.
