Cemetery clean-up praised in Abingdon

Last week I noticed an unusual amount of busyness in Abingdon. There were tractors, big trucks, cement trucks, a fire engine, cars, pickups, and noise not associated with everyday life in my small town. All this stirred my curiosity so I puttered across town to see what was making such a commotion on such a hot day. I found the activity centered in Abingdon Cemetery.
The Packwood Firemen were there setting up broken stones, pouring cement for deteriorated grave stone bases, and cleaning old stones covered with the dark moss of many years in the weather. This was no small undertaking! There were many old stones fallen, some crumbling away in sad heaps, and others leaning in precarious angles. Time and years of neglect had made its mark on many older stones. Their efforts are nothing short of remarkable. Folks who undertake such a job deserve much appreciation.
Lots of hard work in the sweltering sun by the Packwood Fire Department and the generosity of Lee Gobble has made a ?great? improvement to the cemetery. Abingdon appreciates your kindness and thank you, your effort and generosity speak volumes about your character.
