WASHINGTON - While many events are being canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Washington Chamber of Commerce has come up with two new Christmas events that have been customized for fun and safety.
Because the Chamber had to cancel the 30th anniversary Country Candlelight Tour of Homes, they wanted to create an event for the community, while still being safe.
The two new events are a citywide 'Get Lit” outdoor holiday lighting contest and a business Window Wonderland event.
As a throwback to driving around looking at holiday lights, the Chamber will host an outdoor lighting contest, open to all Washington residents.
Chamber event coordinator Alisha Davis said as a kid her family would drive to Wayland to look at all of the decorated houses. The Chamber wanted to bring something like this to Washington.
Get Lit: Outdoor Holiday Lighting Contest gives residence an opportunity to decorate their house and enter to win a grand prize.
The contest will run from Nov. 28 through Jan. 4. A map and booklet will be available for $10 that will point out each house and include discounts. It will be sold at the Chamber and at any participating businesses that want to sell them.
To be included in the contest and booklet, residents need to notify the Chamber by Friday.
Residents aren't the only ones who can decorate to win prizes.
The Window Wonderland event will give Washington residents an opportunity to decorate and compete for a prize.
A map will show all participating businesses, and people can vote which is best decorated. The competition will take place from Nov. 28 to Jan. 4.
The winners of this contest will receive a Holiday Party in a Box filled with items for an office holiday party.
Businesses interested must enter by Nov. 20.
Davis said when the Chamber holds competitions for the businesses it allows the businesses to promote themselves and brings in more customers.
