MT. PLEASANT — “ Hollydaze”, Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra’s holiday gift for all ages, brings the sounds of the season to The Chapel Auditorium in Mount Pleasant with a free performance at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13.
With 190 musicians from 37 cities across Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri, Hollydaze has grown into one of the region’s most cherished winter traditions. This year’s production promises to be the biggest and most festive yet. SEISO expects another packed house this season for what has become one of the warmest, most joyful events of winter.
A Celebration of Community Through Music
Few concerts bring together as many performers, or as many communities, as Hollydaze. This year’s program highlights the incredible talent across our region, including a 54-member children’s choir from 9 cities performing four selections with the full orchestra, featuring the holiday favorite Sleigh Ride. More than 60 singers from 15 cities form the adult choir, joining the orchestra for five works, including an excerpt from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. The full orchestra unites 54 musicians from 18 cities, offering audiences a rare chance to hear an ensemble of this size in Southeast Iowa at no cost. Adding to the celebration are 17 young violinists from two regional studios — Espressivo Strings of the Preucil School of Music in Iowa City and River Strings of Javaux Music School in Quincy, Illinois. Featured soloists include cellist James Ellis with a vibrant, rock-inspired rendition of We Three Kings and violinist Charlene King with a lyrical Celtic setting of Of the Father’s Love Begotten.
A Free, Family-Friendly Winter Tradition
Hollydaze is designed to bring families, friends, and neighbors together with free admission, first-come, first-served seating, and a welcoming atmosphere for all ages. As SEISO Music Director and CEO Bob McConnell puts it, “This concert has really become an amazingly fun production.” A reception with refreshments will follow the performance. The concert is generously sponsored by Meadow and Main Realty & Auction, whose support, along with that of other donors, helps keep SEISO events accessible to everyone. SEISO also reminds families that students and children are always free at all performances, with the exception of Voices of Light.
