FAIRFIELD – Christy Conner will transition into a new role in county government next month when she becomes Jefferson County Auditor.
The move will be an easy one for Conner since it’s just across the lobby from her current job in the courthouse as Jefferson County Deputy Treasurer. Conner was elected to be Jefferson County’s next auditor in an uncontested election in November. She is taking over the position from Scott Reneker, who is retiring after 32 years as county auditor.
Conner grew up in Jefferson County and attended the Fairfield Community School District, graduating in 2003. After high school, she attended DMACC and became a licensed veterinary technician.
“I grew up on a farm with animals, and that was my goal,” Conner said about her career as a veterinary technician.
Conner worked as a vet tech for 11 years, and then she stepped down from the role to raise a family. He said she was looking for a new career that would be more long-term, and got a job at the Jefferson County Treasurer’s Office. She’s been with that office for six years, and said she enjoys getting to meet so many county residents.
When she learned there was an opportunity to run for county auditor, Conner took on the challenge. She said the treasurer and auditor work well together, so she was already familiar with the nature of the auditor’s job. She also liked the chance to get out of her “comfort zone” and learn something new.
The treasurer’s office is responsible for collecting property taxes, vehicle titling and registration, and driver’s license serves. The auditor’s office oversees elections, estate transfers, is clerk to the county board of supervisors, and plays a major role in the budgeting process. Jefferson County Deputy Auditor Abbie DeKleine said each county department head prepares their own budget, and the auditor’s office compiles them all so the supervisors know how much projected revenue and expenses they have to work with.
Conner’s husband is Devon Conner, a native of Mt. Pleasant. She said their family’s favorite activity is going camping. They also raise goats that they show in the county fair, along with chickens. Conner leads the 4-H Fairfield Clover Kids, and is in her fourth year.
Conner was sworn into her new role as county auditor on Monday, Dec. 16, though she won’t start her duties in that office until January. She’ll remain in her post as deputy treasurer through the end of the year.
“I’m very excited for the new role, and ready to learn more,” Conner said.
