FAIRFIELD – The public is invited to participate in a series of cinema workshops and screenings in June at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.
For the third year in a row, the arts center’s Cinema Fairfield is partnering with Maharishi International University’s Cinematic Arts & New Media Program to put on a filmmaking festival called “June Fest.” Joining those two organizations is a third one this year, the David Lynch Master’s in Fine Arts Screenwriting.
Solomon Davis, Assistant Director of the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center, said the workshops and screenings are designed to “build community through the creation and celebration of cinema.” The film workshops will be open to the public and facilitated by CANM and David Lynch MFA faculty. Davis said the event culminates with a presentation of CANM senior student projects, and the result of the workshops.
To cap it off, Michael Barnard will show a sneak peek into the documentary he is making about Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Barnard’s film is called “Going to the Source,” and he will take questions from the audience about it as well. He hopes to use the occasion to raise funds for the project.
Davis said the idea of Cinema Fairfield collaborating with MIU’s film students came from Amine Kouider, chair of MIU’s Department of Cinematic Arts and New Media.
“He wanted to celebrate his graduating students by showing their senior projects in a cinema,” Davis said, “and since we were at the beginning stages of getting our cinema program up and running, he thought it would be interesting to do it at the civic center, and open it up to the community as something they could engage with.”
Davis said they decided to host workshops for people to make their own short films recorded on smartphones, open to all experience levels. This year, the smartphone filmmaking projects will be shown before the “main event” of the CANM senior project screenings.
