City expects more charging station use in summer

WASHINGTON - Municipal data shows that an electric vehicle charging station in Washington’s square has been used 15 times since its installation in September.
City Administrator Deanna McCusker said the number wasn’t surprising, given the season.
“Considering the time of year that it went online, I’m kind of thinking 15 times is a lot,” she said. “I would see that it (would) get used a lot more in the summer time, people coming to events at the park or tourists passing through town ... we’ll know a lot more when we get a year report.”
McCusker said the city was already promoting the charging station, which it has mentioned in a newsletter, on its website and apps for drivers seeking a place to plug in.
“I think word of mouth will also spread the word about it,” she said. “If you have your mapping system on in your car, it should show you where charging stations are located.”
Thus far, McCusker said she’d heard no feedback on the station, positive or negative.
The spot generates data, however, which the city can review. Mayor Jaron Rosien said the station had generated $30 for the city. McCusker said vehicles parked there had charged amounts ranging from 0.74 kWh to 19.9 kWh.
A municipal ordinance change finalized at a Dec. 6 city council meeting designated a second parking space for the charging station. The usage fee remains at 22 cents per kilowatt-hour, the same rate set by city officials when it was switched on.
“Hopefully we’ll see the usage increase,” McCusker said.
