City of Mt. Pleasant offices will not be moving into their new quarters any time soon.
?Hopefully, we will be moved by Sept. 1,? reported City Administrator Brent Schleisman. ?We aren?t in any hurry.?
City offices will be moving from the current city hall on West Monroe Street to the second floor of the civic center/library. That space served as the central office of the Mt. Pleasant Community School District and is being vacated this week.
The school district?s central office staff is in the process of moving to 1010 E. Washington St., Suite 102-103, or the former Farm Credit Services building.
Schleisman said now is not a good time to move because the city is wrapping up fiscal year 2016 and there has been a staff change at city hall. ?It?s the end of the fiscal year and we are in a little flux right now. We also want to clean the carpets and do a little touch-up painting (at the new location) before we move.?
He said city hall staff, with the aid of the public works and parks and recreation departments, plans to handle most of the heavy lifting in the relocation.
As for a new tenant for city hall, Schleisman said the city has ?had some conversations with groups, but nothing solid.?
He said if no buyers come forward, the building would either be listed with a real-estate firm or sold at auction.
Mt. Pleasant City offices have been in the current city hall since the building was built in 1936. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
