City to construct sidewalk on East Washington Street

It didn?t take the Mt. Pleasant City Council long to sweep the table clean Tuesday.

Just two items appeared on the agenda for the council?s regular meeting, which was moved up a day due to the Wednesday announcement of entertainment at the 2016 Midwest Old Threshers Reunion at an Alive After Five event at Main Street Cinemas.

Topping the sparse agenda, council members approved an engineering services agreement with Warner Engineering to design an ADA complaint sidewalk on East Washington between Prairie and Iris streets.

The sidewalk will run on the south side of East Washington Street, just north of Community 1st Credit Union. City Administrator Brent Schleisman said the sidewalk would include cutouts for wheelchair accessibility and also a pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Iris and Washington streets. The sidewalk will be connected to the recreation trail, extending the trail to Hy-Vee.

Warner Engineering will be paid a $1,500 lump sum for the design and drawings of the sidewalk.

In the only other agenda item, the council approved Mayor Steve Brimhall?s appointment of Brent Rich to fill the remainder of Kent White?s term on the park and recreation advisory board.

White had to relinquish the position because he was elected to the city council in November 2015.

Council members meet again in regular session Wednesday, March 23, at 5:30 p.m., in the council chambers of City Hall.
