Cody Freeman is one of three candidates running for three seats up for grabs for the Fairfield Community School District Board of Directors on Nov. 4. School board terms are four years.
The Southeast Iowa Union sent Freeman a candidate questionnaire, and here are his responses:
Q: Why are you running for school board?
I’m running for the Fairfield Community School District Board because I believe in the potential of our district becoming the destination district for Southeast Iowa. My goal is to support continued progress by being an advocate and soundboard for students, staff, and family-ensuring that every voice is heard and respected. I also want to continue the important work the current board has started: addressing the district’s financial challenges, responsible for planning for future facility needs through a bond campaign, and making thoughtful, forward-looking decisions that put our students and staff in the best possible position for success.
Q: Why do you think you would be a good school board member?
I believe I would be a good school board member because I value listening to all perspectives and taking the time to understand both sides of an issue. I’m thoughtful about how each decision impacts not only the people within our district but also the broader community. I value collaboration and common-sense decision-making, and I understand the importance of balancing fiscal responsibility with providing high-quality educational opportunities for our students.
My connection to the Fairfield Community School District runs deep—as a former student, employee, and now as a coach and parent. My immediate family has collectively contributed nearly 150 years of service to education, most of that within FCSD through teaching, coaching, and volunteering. That long-standing commitment has given me a genuine appreciation for the people and programs that make this district exceptional. I’m dedicated to serving with integrity, transparency, and a continued focus on what’s best for our students and staff.
Q: What are your main accomplishments in life?
My greatest accomplishments center around faith, family, and community. I take pride in being a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and uncle, and in building strong relationships grounded in respect, hard work, and integrity. Much of my life has been dedicated to agricultural business, farming and conservation—caring for the land, and ensuring it remains productive for future generations. I value being present, supporting others, celebrating their successes, and standing up for what’s right. Above all, I strive to lead by example through honesty, hard work, and service to others.
Q: What are the areas where the school district needs the most improvement, and how will you, as a board member, help make progress in those areas?
The district can continue improving communication and building trust with students, staff, and the community. It’s also important to connect students with local businesses and community organizations, while also inviting the community into our schools.
As a board member, I plan to be transparent and actively engage with taxpayers and community members to understand their expectations for our district. By fostering open dialogue and collaboration, I aim to ensure the district grows in ways that benefit both students and the community.
Q: Are you in favor of the district's $39.5 million general obligation bond referendum to build a new middle school? Why or why not?
I am in favor of the district’s bond referendum. Our students and staff deserve facilities and classrooms that are modern, safe, and equipped to meet the needs of today’s educational environment. These investments will enhance learning opportunities, support our educators, and foster pride within both the schools and the broader community.
