Comet boys drop games to Holy Trinity, Notre Dame

The Cardinal boys? basketball team was feeling good coming off a nail-biting win Thursday against Pekin, but has suffered a couple of setbacks in its two games since then.
The Comets hosted Holy Trinity Catholic Friday, which was the Comets? third game in four games. Fatigue might have played a factor in Cardinal?s 68-40 defeat. On Tuesday, Cardinal was back in action, this time on the road against Burlington-Notre Dame. The Nikes beat the Comets 55-30.

Holy Trinity staked out a 16-10 lead in the first quarter and expanded it to 36-22 by halftime. Holy Trinity outscored the Comets 11-8 in the third quarter and 21-10 in the fourth.
Sam Pedersen was the leading scorer for the visitors with 16 points on 6-11 field goals. Kaleb Durflinger had eight points, five rebounds and a block. Avery Watson had six points, an assist and a steal. Brandon Potts had five points, two rebounds, two steals and a block.
Logan Rachford made a three-pointer and had three rebounds. Nathan Yeager scored two points and lead the team in rebounds with seven, and in assists with three.
As a team, the Comets shot 14-32 (44 percent) from the floor, including 1-12 (8 percent) from three-point range. They were 11-21 (52 percent) from the free-throw line.
NOTRE DAME 55, COMETS 30
The Nikes wasted no time in jumping on the Comets as they held a 21-5 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Comets found a little more rhythm on offense the rest of the game but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit as they were outscored in the second quarter 9-8, in the third quarter 16-10, and in the fourth quarter 9-7.
Cody Streeby, who did not play against Holy Trinity, came off the bench to score 15 points on 6-13 field goals, and had three steals and a block. Durflinger had six points on 3-10 shooting, and led the team with eight rebounds. Pedersen had three points, two rebounds and a steal.
Avery Watson scored three points. Potts had two points, three rebounds, two steals and a block. Yeager had one point, three rebounds and one steal.
As a team, the Comets shot 11-42 (26 percent), including 2-17 (12 percent) from beyond the arc. The Comets were 6-13 (46 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Comets are 4-4 on the season. Their next game is Jan. 6 at home against New London.
