The Cardinal baseball team went 1-1 in its home tournament Saturday, falling to Davis County 5-1 while creaming Tri-County 20-5. The Comets followed that performance with a convincing 7-0 win against Danville Monday.
MUSTANGS 5, COMETS 1
Davis County scored two in the first, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Cardinal?s lone run came in the sixth when Marcus Olson doubled home Drayton Hamm. That would prove to be the Comets? only hit. They loaded the bases that inning but could not push across any more runs.
?Against Davis County, we made some good plays defensively that kept us in the game, but also had some mistakes with wild pitches and two-out errors that hurt us as well,? said Comet head coach Tom Hallgren. ?Offensively, we got some solid contact the first time through the order, but just couldn?t find the gaps.?
Chase Courtney pitched one inning and took the loss. He allowed two runs, none of them earned, on one hit and two walks. Cameron Honomichl pitched four innings, giving up no runs on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Olson pitched two innings, surrendering three earned runs on four walks and no hits with one punchout. Austin Bride and Trey Albert did the catching for Cardinal.
?Cameron did a great job eating some innings for us to save our arms. He did a great job keeping the ball down in the zone,? said the coach.
COMETS 20, TRI-COUNTY 5
The Comets certainly found the gaps against the Tri-County Trojans in their second game. Taylor Blunt, Trey Albert and Trevor Albert all doubled for Cardinal. Trevor Albert drove in three runs while Tyler Albert plated two. Blunt, Honomichl and Austin Cloke also drove in runs.
Honomichl started and only had to work four innings because of the mercy rule. He allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks with two whiffs. Trey Albert caught him.
?Against Tri-County, we did a good job of being aggressive with pitches in the strike zone,? Hallgren said. ?It was good to see our younger players hitting the ball hard. We are going to need them to produce before this season is over.?
COMETS 7, BEARS 0
Blunt was fantastic on the mound against Danville as he allowed no runs on just three hits and no walks while fanning eight. Trey Albert did the catching. He threw 86 pitches in the complete game shutout.
The Comets got on the board first by scoring three in the fourth. Country tripled in the two-run fifth inning to score Austin Bride. He then scored on Honomichl?s RBI groundout. The Comets plated two more in the sixth. Tyler Albert and Trevor Albert also drove in runs. Olson and Austin Bride each scored two, while Trevor Albert and Hamm scored one.
?We did a great job grinding out quality at-bats even though we only had three hits,? Hallgren said. ?We were able to execute with the bunt and took advantage of some baserunning opportunities to extend the lead. This was a tremendous team effort.?
The Comets fell to Van Buren Tuesday 14-3. No Cardinal stats have been made available from that game. The Comets host Central Lee tonight. Cardinal is 4-3 on the season.
