WASHINGTON — The family of four kids hospitalized by a car accident in Washington on June 13 say they’re grateful for the outpouring of support as they hope for a healthy recovery.
The crash happened after “large equipment” on a semi trailer hit the railroad underpass over Highway 1, knocking it off the truck and into a minivan driven by 15-year-old Josiah Creamer, according to police.
Josiah remains hospitalized in Iowa City, facing brain swelling, and several fractured and broken bones, according to an update posted on a GoFundMe page benefiting the family. Passengers in the car are now out of the hospital, at least one of them with their own severe injuries.
“We’re going day by day, and relying on God, very much so, to help us do everything,” said Ben Creamer, Josiah’s father. “We’re not sure of the future, not sure what’s going to happen or anything like that.”
Creamer said he was grateful for the support of friends, family and strangers as they face such profound uncertainty, coupled with medical bills, and frequent trips to and from the hospital in Iowa City from their home in Washington.
A GoFundMe page set up by Creamer’s sister, Amy Macias, has raised $12,627 of support for the family as of Wednesday morning. Creamer said he was also thankful for numerous meals and gas gift cards donated to the cause, calling the help “a blessing.”
Macias said she hoped the money would help the family handle the expenses, and potentially help make their living space more suitable for the family members injured in the crash, resulting in mobility issues and space needs that have crowded their current two-bedroom apartment.
“The more that we can get them, the better,” she said. “They’re such a humble family … the first two goals were exceeded so quickly, I raised the goal as the money was coming in. If we can reach that $15,000 goal, that’s awesome. I’m blown away by the response they’ve gotten.”
