Eleven people ate their last (congregate) meal on Tuesday, February 18th at the Winfield meals site.
It was a sad day for Winfield and the people who enjoyed and/or depended on the meals. For many, it wasn't only the meal that brought them to the site, but the social aspect, sharing a meal and conversation with friends was an important part if the service.
The reality of the closing was apparent because the "office" was being dismantled and carried out while people were eating. The computer, files, everything pertaining to congregate meals was packed and loaded leaving an empty place in the corner of the Vet's Building that had been occupied by a site manager for over 40 years. The end of an era.
Ninety-one year old Rose Custer said she has been attending congregate meals for 28 years and is going to miss them.
